OSN: Tear film osmolarity outperforms other measures of dry eye severity in study

Ocular Surgery News highlights TearLab’s IOVS publication in the November 2010 edition.  It summarizes the article which is a great analysis of how predictive osmolarity is compared with other tests we have used in the past and shows how osmolarity can improve accuracy of your Dry Eye Disease diagnostic skills.

Tear film osmolarity proved more reliable than other testing methods in gauging severity of dry eye disease, a study found.

“Consistent with its status as a global marker for the disease, tear osmolarity was the only sign that exhibited meaningful correlation across normal, mild/moderate and severe categories,” the study authors said. “These results confirm that the composite index provided an unbiased method for classifying dry eye patients.”

The prospective study included 299 subjects evaluated at 10 centers in the European Union and United States. Average subject age was 46.3 years.
